Coco, Kuennen record breakers

WHITEFISH — Junior Drew Coco and senior Lauren Kuennen set Whitefish school records in the 1,600, and freshman Breanne Kelley of Polson led a parade of purple and gold across the finish line in the 400 at the Northwestern A divisional track meet Friday.

Coco posted a time of 4:24.2, while Kuennen lowered the standard to 5:18.17. They also held both records.

Coco was an easy winner, leading from start to finish. He turned a 61-second first lap and had times of 2:07 and 3:17 after the next two.

“I got scared,” Coco said of his first-lap time.

“I usually try to go 62-64. To go through that fast was kind of scary.”

Coco, however, was right on pace at the halfway point.

“Home track, divisionals, you know, I was going for personal bests,” Coco said.

“I don’t know if I was making a statement (today).

“I would like to have seen it a little bit faster (lap three), but I’m happy with it.”

Coco won the 1,600 last year with a time of 4:30.66 with Logan Torgison of Polson second, 4:34.63.

Torgison finished second on Friday, 4:35.39.

Torgison and Coco are scheduled to compete against each other in five events at the two-day meet. They also went head-to-head in the 400 with Torgison winning that battle. He finished third (51.55), while Coco was fourth (52.08).

Libby’s Zack Rowan had the best time, 50.69.

While runners, jumpers, vaulters and throwers have had to contend with lousy weather all spring, conditions for opening day were ideal. There was plenty of sunshine and temperatures near 80.

“Actually, I like it,” Coco said.

“It makes you a little uncomfortable and tells you that you feel tired. But your muscles are warm and you can turn in a fast time.

“I told myself I felt strong, but I didn’t feel so hot,” Coco said during the race.

“Sometimes you have to play mind games. My coach (Bill Brist) tells me that pain is my friend. That always helps.”

Kuennen said the weather did not change her racing strategy.

“It’s always a little tougher to run in the heat, but you always have to be prepared for what you run in,” she said.

“You have to go in with a good attitude and just get what you can out of it.”

And that worked for her. She made her final push on the last lap to beat Kayla Carlson of Bigfork (5:19.34) by less than a second.

“Sometimes I start out in front and try to hold it for as long as I can,” she said.

“It depends on the day and who the competition is. The last lap (today), I tried to go for it.”

Kuennen set the school record last week at the ABC meet in Polson. She shaved two seconds off that previous best.

“Kayla ran a really good race, too,” Kuennen said.

“She’s been a really good competitor all year.”

Kelley was running the 400 for just the second time this season. Her first crack at it came in the Top 10 Meet in Missoula, where she finished fourth in 59.9

This time she won it in 58.59, which is a personal- best time.

“I was trying to keep up with everyone and kick at the end, I guess.”

Polson finished 1-2-4-5 in the event to score 24 points. Nicole Davey was second (59.0), Sierre Pete fourth (1:00.1) and Merilee Mowbray fifth (1:00.79).

Breaking up the pack was Kuennen, who finished third (59.74).

“It’s always fun to compete with them,” Kelley said of her teammates.

“It’s nice because we all get along.”

Kelley also ran a leg on Polson’s winning 400 relay team, 51.06, along with Pete, Davey and Mowbray.

Other individual event winners on the day were: (girls) Ashley Ferda, Whitefish, 100 hurdles, 14.97; Tara Johnson, Polson, pole vault, 9-6; Adessa Durgla, Ronan/St. Ignatius, triple jump, 33-1; and Loni Havlovick, Polson, discus, 110-6; (boys) Cody Doyle, Polson, 110 hurdles, 15.42; Donny Tudahl, Bigfork, discus, 156-10; Roland Benedict, Bigfork, triple jump, 43-7 1/4; and Ryan Kelley, Polson, pole vault, 13-0.

The Whitefish boys — Dalton Rice, Aaron Tkachyk, Tyler Mason and Anto Doud) — won the 400 relay, 44.59.

Polson leads the team standings. The Pirates have 66 points on the girls’ side with Whitefish second, 62, and Columbia Falls third, 33.

The Pirates have a little more breathing room on the boys’ side with 53 points. Whitefish is second, 46, and Bigfork third, 38.

The meet continues today, starting at noon.

The top five placers in all events advance to state.
